Lewis suffered a stroke back in 2019
Nicknamed "The Killer", the 87-year-old artist is well-known for songs like "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On."
He was advised by his doctor not to attend the ceremony in Nashville.
Hank Williams Jr. and Kris Kristofferson, two other country music luminaries, turned up to take the award in his place.
